Arthur Henry Knighton- Hammond ROI 1875-1970

Best known for his landscapes, society portraits and industrial paintings. He used a variety of styles but is most famous as a water-colourist.
One of six children he left school aged 11 working in his brother’s grocery store before training as a watchmaker’s apprentice for 41/2 years. Six months before completing his apprenticeship, he left to study Art, firstly at the Nottingham School of Art, and then at the Westminster School of Art, and also in France and Italy. He lived in Europe from 1922 before returning to England in 1932.
He exhibited at the RA, NEAC, RBA, Fine Art Society,and RSW, Tate Gallery, Musee du Jeu de Paume, Paris and galleries in New Zealand, South Africa and Yugoslavia.
He developed an international reputation and was described by Augustus John as ‘the greatest painter in watercolour of our time’. His work is on display at the National Portrait Gallery, Centre Georges-Pompidou in Paris, South African National Gallery, Royal Scottish Society and in many public and private collections.
He married three times before finally settling in Seaborough, Devon.
A retrospective of his work was held at the Upper Grosvenor Galleries in 1971
